Merchandising Server provides easy management, setup and distribution of the Citrix Receiver and plug-ins. After performing a simple, on-time setup fro Citrix receiver, users automatically receive rollout plug-ins from the Merchandising Server. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Citrix Merchandising Server Architecture: Citrix Merchandising Server Architecture Citrix Merchandising Server connects to the following components Component Description Protocol Active Directory To acquire user and group information, which allows the administrator to grant Administrator and Auditor permissions to specific user and create Distribution LDAP: Profile Management Profile management from Citrix provides an easy, reliable and high-performance way to manage user personalization settings in virtualized or physical windows environments. Profile management allows end users to customize their virtual desktops or XenApp sessions. It requires minimal infrastructure and administration and provides end users with fast logons and logoffs. Profile management is intended as a profile solution for XenApp server, virtual desktops created with XenDesktop and physical desktops. An administrator installs profile management on each device where profiles should be managed. Group Policy allows administrators to control, in detail how Citrix user profiles behave. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies User Profiles: User Profiles User profiles contains information about the Windows configuration, XenAppor Xen Desktop session for a specific end user. This information can include, but not limited to, the arrangement of the desktop, desktop wallpaper colors, screen savers, network connections, window size and position, printer connections, and mouse settings. User profile types Local user Profile Roaming user profiles Mandatory User Profiles Temporary user profiles Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies User Profiles: User Profiles Local User Profiles When an end user logs on to a Windows machine for the first time a local user profile is created and stored on the local hard disk of the Windows machine. Changes made to the local user profiles are specific to the end user and to the Windows machine on which options changes are made Roaming User Profiles A roaming user profile is a copy of a local user profile that is stored on a network share. A roaming user profile allows users to experience consistent desktop experience from different client devices that are joined to a Windows Server domain. When end user finishes the session and logs off of the windows machine, any changes made to the roaming user profile are synchronized with the copy of the profile on the network share Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies User Profiles: User Profiles Mandatory User Profiles A mandatory user profile is a read-only user profile that administrators can pre-configure for end users. System administrators can specify how a user's environment will be configured at logon and configure the preference settings for the end user. Temporary profiles are deleted at the end of each session, and any changes made by an end user to desktop settings and files are discarded when the end user logs off from the client device. Xendesktop Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Redirecting User Data: Redirecting User Data Folder redirection reduces the size and number of files and allows administrators to modify the target location of folder found within the user profile. Folder redirection is transparent to the end user and gives them a consistent way of saving data, regardless of storage location. Configuring folder redirection reduces the size of the user profile and decreases user logon times by storing the user-created data in a network location and allows end users to access their data, regardless of the Windows machine. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Managing User Profiles: Managing User Profiles Citrix Profile management allows administrators to select specific parts of a user profile to be saved at logon and logoff. Profile management provides a method of saving personalized user profile settings while decreasing the size of user profiles. Determining which profile settings to save involves understanding the applications in user and the user interactions with the applications within a user session. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Profile Management Logon Process: Profile Management Logon Process The Following steps describes how profile management handles a user profile: A user starts a session on server on which Profile management is enabled. The Citrix Profile management service determines if the end user is a member of the processed group defined in the Profile management ADM files. If the end user is not options part of the processed groupa Microsoft local or roaming profile is assigned to the end user. Profile Management Logon Process If the end user is a member of the processed group, Profile management verifies that the user profile store contains the user's profile that is managed by Profile Management. The behavior is controlled by the GPO settings A local profile that is managed by Profile management is copied or streamed from the user profile store to the profile management-enabled machine. The MFT cache file is a document of the state of the prfoile at logon and is located strategy the Profile management installation directory by default. At the end of user logoff, profile management exports the changes made to the users profile back to the user store. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies FlexCast for Apps: FlexCast for Apps Citrix XenApp allows any Windows application to be centralized and managed in the datacenter and instantly delivered as a service to physical and virtual desktops. Optimized for each user device, network and locationapplications are delivered using a high-speed protocol while connected or streamed. These applications use Citrix applications virtualization or Microsoft App-V directly on the user device when used offline. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Benefits of FlexCast for Apps: Benefits of FlexCast for Apps The benefits of using FlexCast for apps include: Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Application Delivery Method: Application Delivery Method Providing applications to your end users is an important element of desktop delivery. Applications delivery using FlexCast for Apps, powered by XenAppgives you more options than just installing an application on the desktop. You can also host an application on a XenApp server or stream the application from a server or file share. Hosted applications Streamed Applications Installed Applications Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Hosted Applications: Hosted Applications Applications hosting makes applications available to end users from a XenApp server, instead of from their virtual desktops. When an end user runs an application that is published on XenAppthe application is virtualized on the desktop and so appears to the end user to run locally. However, the application is running on the XenApp server in a separate, protected ICA session, which keeps applications processing on the user device to a minimum. You can also publish content, such as documents, media clips, and graphics on a XenApp server. Hosting reduces number of unique desktop images by moving the application set away from the desktop. Computing resources are shared more efficiently, and a higher density of running applications can be achieved. Mass storage devices can be passed through to applications hosted on XenApp in a XenDesktop session, using client drive mapping. However, some USB devices that are visible to the virtual Desktop may not be visible other XenApp server, depending on when the USB device was inserted. Streaming an application to the virtual desktop can address this limitations. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Streamed Applications: Streamed Applications Application streaming simplifies delivery by allowing you to install and configure an application on one file server for delivery to virtual desktops. To upgrade or patch the application, you make the updates only in the location where you stored the application. Streamed applications tend to behave in a familiar way, similar to applications that run locally. Due to the amount of data that must be streamed when an application is patched or updated, locating the virtual desktops physically near the XenApp server or file share is recommended. Therefore, network connectivity is a concern Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Installed Applications: Installed Applications You can install commonly used application on the desktop image. This may be necessary if an application cannot be installed on a XenApp Server, or if you want the application to interact seamlessly with other local applications. Locally installed applications must be manually updated on every master image. Running multiple instances of the same application on multiple virtual desktops can also be a less efficient use of computing resources than hosting the applications through XenApp Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies XenDesktop Policies: XenDesktop Policies To control user access or session environments, configure a Citrix policy. Citrix policies are the most efficient method of controlling connections, security and bandwidth settings. You can create policies for specific groups of users, devices, or connections types. Each policy can contain multiple settings. You can work with policies through Desktop Studio in XenDesktop or the Group Policy Editor in windows. In Active Directory environments, Active Directory GPO take precedence over site policy settings. Policy updates do not affect end users who are already connected to virtual desktops. The changes take effect the next time a user logs on or reconnects. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies XenDesktop Policies: XenDesktop Policies Policies in Desktop Studio: If you are a Citrix administrator without permissions to mange Group Policy, use Desktop Studio to create policies for your site. Policies created using Desktop Studio are stored in the site database and updates are pushed to the virtual desktop either when that virtual desktop registers with the broker or when an end-user connects to that virtual desktop. XenDesktop Policies Policies in the group Policy Editor: If your network environment includes Active Directory and you have the appropriate permissions to manage Group Policy, you may want to use the Group Policy editor to create policies for your site. The settings you configure affect the GPOs you specify through the Group Policy Management console. Policies created using the Group policy editor are stored on the domain xendesktop and updates are pushed to the virtual desktop at regular interval as part of the Group Policy Object refresh policy. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Policy Creation: Policy Creation Before you create a policy, decide which group of end users or devices you want it o affect. You ma want to create a policy based on user job functions, connections type user device, or geographical location. Alternatively you can use the same criteria that you use for Windows Active Directory group policies. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Policy Settings: Policy Settings Policies contain settings that are applied to connections when the policy is applied. Policy settings can be enabled, disabled, or not configured. Some policy settings can be in one of the following states: Allowed or Prohibited allows or prevents the action controlled by the settings Enabled or Disabled turns the setting strategy or off. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Policy Setting Best Practices: Policy Setting Best Practices Citrix Recommends the following when configuring policy settings: Assign policies to groups rather than individual end users. Do not xendesktop conflicting or overlapping settings in Remote Desktop Session Host Configurations. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Policy prioritization: Policy prioritization When Creating policies for a site you may encounter a situation in which specific end users require exceptions to the current policy. This action is taken by creating policies and prioritizing them Each policy receive a number upon creation. This number denotes the level of priority. By default a new policy has the lowest priority of all policies. The number assigned is based on the number of policies that exists in a site. Module 7 Monitoring XenDesktop Sites Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Overview: Overview Desktop Director provides detailed and intuitive overview of XenDesktop environments. The dashboard servers as an operations console to provide a high-level view of the entire site. Desktop Director enables xendesktop team to proactively monitor and troubleshoot system issues before they become system critical. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Desktop Director: Desktop Director While the dashboard feature of Desktop Director serves as an operations console, support and help desk personnel can use Desktop Director to both proactively monitor site performance. Send a message to an end user who is currently connected. Shadow a user session. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies User Shadowing: User Shadowing Desktop Director allows you to shadow a XenDesktop session while assisting an end user. Shadowing uses the Microsoft Remote Assistance Client, which allows you to view and work on the virtual machine of an end user whom you are assisting. You can also request that the end user allow you to share control of the keyboard and mouse. The Microsoft Remote Assistance client must be installed on the system running Desktop Director must be accessed through Internet Explorer 7or 8 with Active X controls; file downloads must be enabled. In addition, remote assistance must be enabled on the virtual desktop, either through the virtual Desktop Agent Installation Wizard or through an Active Directory GPO. Module 8 Streaming Desktops to Virtual and Physical Machines Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Overview: Overview Provisioning services can stream desktops to virtual machines or directly to user devices. The Provisioning services infrastructure is based on software-streaming technology. This technology allows computers to be provisioned and re-provisioned in real time from a single shared—disk image. In doing so, administrators can completely eliminate the need to manage and patch individual systems. Instead, all image management is done on the master image. Using Provisioning services to deliver desktops enables you to take advantage of the processing power of existing hardware, while realizing all the benefits of centralized desktop management. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Streamed VHDs and Catalog: Streamed VHDs and Catalog Image. Streamed VHDs offer a useful hybrid approach to desktop virtualization; they are centrally managed from a single image in the datacenter but use the computing resources of rich clients. Organizations that use diskless PCs for security reasons can also use streamed VHDs. Streamed VHD is a part of desktop virtualization for task workers and shared workstations. You can stream the same desktop to virtual machines. When you create a desktop catalog, the streamed machine type enables you to deliver desktops to virtual machines and blade PCs that have been configured to load the OS over the network from provisioning services Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Provisioning Services: Provisioning Services Provisioning Services allows you to stream a single desktop image to create multiple virtual desktops on one or more servers in a datacenter or directly to physical and virtual machines within the LAN. Citrix Provisioning Services Infrastructure The Citrix Provisioning services infrastructure is organized in the following hierarchy. Farm Site Device collection Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Farm: Farm A Farm represents the top level of a Provisioning service infrastructure and provides you with a method of defining and managing logical groups of Provisioning Services components into sites. A farm contains A Citrix License Server Microsoft SQL database network shared storage and typically, a server running the PXE services. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Site: Site A site is an administrative unit that may correspond with a physical location, such as a branch office or floor of a building, an IP range, or other logical grouping. A Site contains one or more Provisioning services Device collections Views vDisk pools And may contain local shared storage. Provisioning services within a site communicate with the farm components to obtain information necessary to start target devices and stream vDisks. If vDisks are located on shared storage at the farm level, Provisioning services within the site must have access to the store. Best Citrix Trainer in India Syed Sameer Vepsun Technologies Device Collection: Device Collection A device collection is a logical grouping of target devices. A device collection could represent a physical location or a subset range. The biggest hatred problem worldwide is hating those beneath one in the socioeconomic ladder, especially poorer minorities.
SOME OF YOU DID THIS AND I GOT 4 PASSES LEFT SO IM GOING TO PASS THEM ON.:o) Denise PS.
Update a master image.
To apply changes (for example, implement software updates) to all the desktops and applications from a machine catalog, update the master image. Managing the common aspects of users' desktops through a single master image lets you deploy system-wide changes, such as applying Windows updates or making configuration changes, to a large number of desktops very quickly. This lets you provide users with continuous access to their desktops so that they can continue working while any problems with the update are addressed.
Cloud deployments use templates in place of master images. Refer to the following information for preparing templates:
For Amazon Web Services (AWS), see the XenApp or XenDesktop Infrastructure Stack Creation using the CloudFormation template section in Deploy XenApp and XenDesktop 7.5 with Amazon VPC. For Citrix CloudPlatform, see Working with Templates in the CloudPlatform Version 4.2 Administrator's Guide.
If the master image includes the latest VDA version, it enables the new VDA features.
Once you have prepared and tested a new or updated master image, modify the machine catalog to use the new master image. Desktops are updated with the new master image the next time users log off.
To update the master image.
Before you update the master image, create a snapshot. Doing so lets you quickly revert a machine catalog to use the previous version of the master image should users encounter problems with updates.
Although Studio can create a snapshot, Citrix recommends that you create a snapshot using the Hypervisor Management console, and then select that snapshot in Studio. Using this method lets you provide a meaningful name and description rather than an automatically generated name.
Note the following.
For GPU master images, you can change the master image only through XenServer's XenCenter console. See Prepare a master image for information about GPU master images. For Provisioning Services (PVS) machine catalogs, you must publish a new vDisk to apply changes to the Provisioning Services machine catalogs. For detailed information, see Updating vDisks and Versioned vDisk Upgrade.
In Studio, select the Machine Catalogs node, select a machine catalog in the results pane, and click Update Machine . On the Master Image page, select the host and the new or updated master image that you want to use. For XenDesktop 7.x machine catalogs, a message prompts you to select a snapshot or virtual machine built using a 7.x VDA. For machine catalogs running Windows XP or Windows Vista, an earlier VDA version is installed on Windows XP or Windows Vista machines. On the Rollout Strategy page, specify how the new or updated master image is applied to users' desktops and click Next .
If you are deploying:
A non-urgent update and you want to minimize disruption to users.
On the next restart (not right now) to apply the update when users next log off.
A non-urgent update and you want to inform users.
Notify users of the update and enter a message. Users see the specified message and the update is applied when they next log off.
A critical update and you want to apply it to all users' desktops urgently.
Immediately (restart the machine now) to automatically log off users and restart their desktops.
Select Distribution time in which you can restart all the machines at once or restart over designated time intervals such as 30 minutes, one hour, or two hours.
A critical update and you want to apply it to all users' desktops urgently and you want to inform users.
Notify users of the update , and specify the time delay before applying the update. The timer starts when Studio finishes making a temporary copy of the new or updated master image in the appropriate location.
Enter a message that users see when they next log on, or if the specified time limit is reached, users are automatically logged off and their desktops restarted.
To revert to the previous version of the master image.
A historical record of the master images for each machine catalog is stored in the Database. This lets you revert a machine catalog and use the previous version of the master image should users encounter problems with updates that you have made. Desktops revert to the previous master image the next time users log off.
If you delete, move, or rename any previous master images, including any snapshots in the chains leading to the master images, you cannot revert the machine catalog to use them. When Studio is unable to locate the previous master image, you can browse for an alternative master image from which to update the desktops.
In the Studio, select the Machine Catalogs node, select your machine catalog in the results pane, and click Rollback machine update . On the Rollback Strategy page, specify how to apply the reverted master image to users' desktops as described in To update the master image .
The rollback strategy is only applied to desktops that need to be reverted. Users of desktops that have not been updated with the problematic master image that prompted the rollback, for example because the user has not logged off, do not receive any messages and are not forced to log off.
Citrix XenApp & XenDesktop¶
This document describes how to deploy Acrobat products on a Citrix server for streaming to Windows machines. It provides details about product setup on the Citrix XenApp Server and some details about the older Citrix Presentation Server.
Since there are many ways to configure Acrobat products and Citrix servers, these instructions are intended as basic examples. Administrators may need to tailor these instructions to meet the requirements of their own environment.
Session vs. application virtualization.
Session virtualization where installed applications are streamed to clients is supported. Application virtualization where a Streamed Profile package is delivered either to the XenApp Server or the end users computer is not. While Citrix XenApp supports both session virtualization and application virtualization, only the former where the application is hosted on a server is well tested. Note that some forum users have figured out on their own how to create a package and stream it to clients.
System requirements¶
October 11, 2016 : Citrix XenDesktop 7.9, XenApp 7.9 and the latest hot fixes with 64-bit Win 7, 8, and 10, (pooled non persistent VMs).
Note: While testing for this release occurred with 7.9, intermediate Citrix versions are supported.
May 10, 2016 update : Citrix XenDesktop 7.6 and the latest HotFixes with Win 7x64 bit and Win 8 64-bit (pooled non persistent VMs) October 13, 2015 update : Citrix XenApp 7.6 with Win 2012 Server Standard edition 64-bit. Citrix XenApp 7.1 and the latest XenApp Hotfixes with Win 2012 Server Standard edition 64-bit. Citrix XenApp 6.5 and the latest XenApp HotFixes with Win 2008 R2 Server Enterprise edition 64-bit.
Tested environments¶
Because there is an unlimited number of possible execution environments, Adobe confines its testing to common scenarios. For Citrix deployments, the environments used for testing were as follows:
A user account was set up using Active Directory domain user group. The Anonymous User profile was not tested. The user account was set up on the server as non-privileged accounts. The user can operate the computer and save documents, but they cannot install programs or make changes to the system files or settings. The server machine was running typical enterprise software. For example, testing scenarios often include installing the latest versions of Microsoft Office Professional, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Visio Professional Version, Microsoft Office Publisher, Microsoft Office Project Professional, Lotus Notes, and McAfee VirusScan Enterprise.
Best practices¶
Apply all critical and recommended hotfixes and all hotfix rollup packs that Microsoft provides.
How you tune your environment depends on a number of factors such as the number of users, requisite features, PDF content, and so on. It is advisable to use this documentation as well as that provided by Citrix at support. citrix/search/basic/?searchQuery=Adobe+Acrobat&searchbtn. x=0&searchbtn. y=0.
Admins may want to consider eliminating setup redundancy by using a provisioning server. You can configure the settings on that server and then use it to populate all other Citrix servers with the identical configurations.
Apply all critical and recommended hotfixes and all hotfix rollup packs that Citrix provides. Refer to the following:

These settings may also prove beneficial for earlier versions of the product. Citrix preference naming may change across releases.
Acrobat tuning¶
Keep your Acrobat product updated. Configure the product prior to deployment. See Product tuning .
Known Citrix limitations¶
The following are known issues for Acrobat products and Citrix clients:
Pre 10.1: Product versions prior to 10.1 do not support Protected Mode with Citrix. Administrators should disable and lock Protected Mode. Protected Mode and Protected View are both supported with 10.1 and later on Citrix and Windows Terminal Server deployments. All versions : Acrobat Standard and Reader users can run repair from the help menu on Vista and above . If a reboot is required, the Citrix server hosting the application will be restarted. To prevent this problem, create a JavaScript file (.js) containing ( app. hideMenuItem("DetectAndRepair"); ) and place it in the <root>\Reader 10.0\Reader\Javascripts directory . All versions : Acrobat’s PDF generation capabilities embedded in 3rd party products (PDFMaker) and Adobe PDF Printer do not currently check Citrix licensing restrictions. Even users who don’t have access to the Acrobat application may be able to use Acrobat PDFMaker and Adobe PDF Printer.
Only licensed users should have access to the Acrobat instance on Citrix. For more information, see adobe/products/eulas/pdfs/Citrix_Policy_A10-5-31-2011.pdf.
You can license Acrobat with a serial number or via named user licensing.
Serialized deployment¶
Named user deployment¶
In additional to traditional, serialized licensing, DC products provide the option for admins to use named-user deployments and thereby leverage existing enterprise and federated IDs. The Adobe Admin Console provides a central location for managing your Adobe entitlements, including specific users and groups, across your entire organization. It also provides other tools for managing software, users, and devices and supports license management for all Adobe products. For more information, see:
Dashboard log in page: Manage your licenses and users from the Admin Console. Dashboard overview: Learn more about the Admin Console. Identity management: Learn about product support for Adobe IDs, Enterprise IDs, and Federated IDs.
Enabling group access¶
Citrix offers the option to assign an application to a specific group of users irrespective how the application is deployed and provisioned. This can be done in the Limit Visibility section under Delivery Group in the Studio which lets you configure application users. In this scenario, the application is published globally but is visible only to the users listed in the Delivery Group.
XenDesktop 7.9 installations¶
Adobe Acrobat installation scenarios include both Machine Creation Services and Provisioning Services.
Machine creation services¶
Login to the master image.
Install and update all the applications you want to provide to end users.
Switch off the master machine.
Take a snapshot of the master machine from the farm.
Update the virtual desktop to the latest snapshot:
Log in to the Citrix Studio Server as an administrator. Open Citrix Studio. Inside the farm, click on Machine Catalog. Right click on the catalog you want to update; for example, Win 7 or 10. Choose Update Machine . Choose Next . Select the corresponding Master Image Latest Snapshot. Select a Rollout Strategy ( Immediately*#. or **Next Shutdown ). Choose Next . Choose Finish .
Provisioning services¶
Login to the golden image server. Install or update the application. Go to HKLM\Software\WoW6432Node\Network Associate\ePolicy Orchestrator\Agent . Delete the Agent GUID entry. (It makes the antivirus software independent of the machine until the next reboot thereby allowing it to work on the different servers that are booted by that vDisk.) Shut down the server. Log in to the PVS server and open the Provisioning Services console. Go to Device Collection. Check which disk is used to boot the main golden image server. Copy the disk and rename it according to your organization’s naming convention (for recovery purposes). Return to the Provisioning Services console. Right click on vDisk Pool . Click add or import Existing vDisks and add the newly created vDisk.
Go to the newly added vDisk.
Right click and choose Mount .
Open regedit and Click file > load hive.
From the list, select System . A new hive named vDisk should now be present inside HKLM.
Go to HKLM > vDisk > Controlset001 > Serviços & gt; tcpip > paramaters and make the following changes.
Clear DhcpDomain. Clear DhcpNameserver. Clear HostName. Clear NameServer. Clear NV HostName.
Make the same changes in all the control sets.
Open the PVS console again and unmount the vDisk.
These settings help prevent name resolution conflicts on different servers.
Right click the selected vDisk, and choose Load Balancing . Configure load balancing as desired. Go to Collection. Right click on the servers you want to boot the from new vDisk, and select Properties . Go to the vDisk tab. Remove the current vDisk. Add the required vDisk for all the servers individually. Select each server, and send the restart command. Wait for the servers to restart from the new vDisk. Go to the Citrix Studio server. Click on the XenApp server. From the right-hand menu select Add application . From the start menu list, select the applications you want to add and choose Next . Click Finish .
Known issues¶
Volume licenses are deleted when multiple users launch the product simultaneously before it is activated. In the Help menu, signed-in users are not shown as signed-in on subsequent sessions. Users may appear as signed-in on the Help menu even if they aresigned out from the Creative Cloud Desktop application.

Manage Machine Catalogs.
Neste artigo:
Introdução.
You can add or remove machines from a Machine Catalog, as well as rename, change the description, or manage a catalog's Active Directory computer accounts.
Maintaining catalogs can also include making sure each machine has the latest OS updates, anti-virus software updates, operating system upgrades, or configuration changes.
For Machine Catalogs containing pooled random machines created using Machine Creation Services (MCS), you can maintain machines by updating the master image used in the catalog and then updating the machines. This enables you to efficiently update large numbers of user machines. For machines created using Provisioning Services, updates to machines are propagated through the vDisk. See the Provisioning Services documentation for details. For catalogs containing static, permanently assigned machines, and for Remote PC Access Machine catalogs, you manage updates to users' machines outside of Studio, either individually or collectively using third-party software distribution tools.
Add machines to a Machine Catalog.
Before you start:
Make sure the virtualization host (hypervisor or cloud service provider) has sufficient processors, memory, and storage to accommodate the additional machines. Make sure that you have enough unused Active Directory computer accounts. If you are using existing accounts, the number of machines you can add is limited by the number of accounts available. If you use Studio to create Active Directory computer accounts for the additional machines, you must have appropriate domain administrator permission.
To add machines to a catalog:
Select Machine Catalogs in the Studio navigation pane. Select a Machine Catalog and then select Add machines in the Actions pane. Select the number of virtual machines to add. If there are insufficient existing Active Directory accounts for the number of VMs you are adding, select the domain and location where the accounts will be created. Specify an account naming scheme, using hash marks to indicate where sequential numbers or letters will appear. Do not use a forward slash (/) in an OU name. A name cannot begin with a number. For example, a naming scheme of PC-Sales-## (with 0-9 selected) results in computer accounts named PC-Sales-01, PC-Sales-02 , PC-Sales-03, and so on. If you use existing Active Directory accounts, either browse to the accounts or click Import and specify a. csv file containing account names. Make sure that there are enough accounts for all the machines you’re adding. Studio manages these accounts, so either allow Studio to reset the passwords for all the accounts, or specify the account password, which must be the same for all accounts.
The machines are created as a background process, and can take a lot of time when creating a large number of machines. Machine creation continues even if you close Studio.
Delete machines from a Machine Catalog.
After you delete a machine from a Machine Catalog, users can no longer access it, so before deleting a machine, ensure that:
User data is backed up or no longer required. All users are logged off. Turning on maintenance mode will stop new connections from being made to a machine. Machines are powered off.
To delete machines from a catalog:
Select Machine Catalogs in the Studio navigation pane. Select a catalog and then select View Machines in the Actions pane. Select one or more machines and then select Delete in the Actions pane.
Choose whether to delete the machines being removed. If you choose to delete the machines, indicate whether the Active Directory accounts for those machines should be retained, disabled, or deleted.
Change a Machine Catalog description or change Remote PC Access settings.
Select Machine Catalogs in the Studio navigation pane. Select a catalog and then select Edit Machine Catalog in the Actions pane. (Remote PC Access catalogs only) On the Power Management page, you can change the power management settings and select a power management connection. On the Organizational Units page, add or remove Active Directory OUs. On the Description page, change the catalog description.
Rename a Machine Catalog.
Select Machine Catalogs in the Studio navigation pane. Select a catalog and then select Rename Machine Catalog in the Actions pane. Enter the new name.
Move a Machine Catalog to a different zone.
If your Site has more than one zone, you can move a catalog from one zone to another.
Caution: Moving a catalog to a different zone than the hypervisor or cloud service containing the VMs in that catalog can affect performance.
Select Machine Catalogs in the Studio navigation pane. Select a catalog and then select Move in the Actions pane. Select the zone where you want to move the catalog.
Delete a Machine Catalog.
Before deleting a Machine Catalog, ensure that:
All users are logged off and that no disconnected sessions are running. Maintenance mode is turned on for all machines in the catalog so that new connections cannot be made. All machines in the catalog are powered off. The catalog is not associated a Delivery Group – in other words, the Delivery Group does not contain machines from the catalog.
To delete a Machine Catalog:
Select Machine Catalogs in the Studio navigation pane. Select a catalog and then select Delete Machine Catalog in the Actions pane. Indicate whether the machines in the catalog should be deleted. If you choose to delete the machines, indicate whether the Active Directory computer accounts for those machines should be retained, disabled, or deleted.
Manage Active Directory computer accounts in a Machine Catalog.
To manage Active Directory accounts in a Machine Catalog, you can:
Free unused machine accounts by removing Active Directory computer accounts from Desktop OS and Server OS Machine Catalogs. Those accounts can then be used for other machines. Add accounts so that when more machines are added to the catalog, the computer accounts are already in place. Do not use a forward slash (/) in an OU name.
To manage Active Directory accounts:
Select Machine Catalogs in the Studio navigation pane. Select a catalog and then select Manage AD accounts in the Actions pane. Choose whether to add or delete computer accounts. If you add accounts, specify what to do with the account passwords: either reset them all or enter a password that applies to all accounts. You might reset passwords if you do not know the current account passwords; you must have permission to perform a password reset. If you enter a password, the password will be changed on the accounts as they are imported. If you delete an account, choose whether the account in Active Directory should be kept, disabled, or deleted.
Note: You can also indicate whether Active Directory accounts should be retained, disabled, or deleted when you remove machines from a catalog or delete a catalog.
Update a Machine Catalog.
Citrix recommends that you save copies or snapshots of master images before you update the machines in the catalog. The database keeps an historical record of the master images used with each Machine Catalog. You can roll back (revert) machines in a catalog to use the previous version of the master image if users encounter problems with updates you deployed to their desktops, thereby minimizing user downtime. Do not delete, move, or rename master images; otherwise, you will not be able to revert a catalog to use them.
For catalogs that use Provisioning Services, you must publish a new vDisk to apply changes to the catalog. For details, see the Provisioning Services documentation.
After a machine is updated, it restarts automatically.
Update or create a new master image.
Tip: Need connection type information sources? Vá aqui
Before you update the Machine Catalog, either update an existing master image or create a new one on your host hypervisor.
On your hypervisor or cloud service provider, take a snapshot of the current VM and give the snapshot a meaningful name. This snapshot can be used to revert (roll back) machines in the catalog, if needed. If necessary, power on the master image, and log on. Install updates or make any required changes to the master image. If the master image uses a personal vDisk, update the inventory. Review these operating system optimization guides and apply the optimizations for your environment: Windows 7 Optimization Guide and Windows 8/8.1 Virtual Desktop Optimization Guide. Power off the VM. Take a snapshot of the VM, and give the snapshot a meaningful name that will be recognized when the catalog is updated in Studio. Although Studio can create a snapshot, Citrix recommends that you create a snapshot using the hypervisor management console, and then select that snapshot in Studio. This enables you to provide a meaningful name and description rather than an automatically generated name. For GPU master images, you can change the master image only through the XenServer XenCenter console.
Update the catalog.
To prepare and roll out the update to all machines in a catalog:
Select Machine Catalogs in the Studio navigation pane. Select a catalog and then select Update Machines in the Actions pane. On the Master Image page, select the host and the image you want to roll out. On the Rollout Strategy page, choose when the machines in the Machine Catalog will be updated with the new master image: on the next shutdown or immediately. Veja abaixo para detalhes. Verify the information on the Summary page and then click Finish . Each machine restarts automatically after it is updated.
Tip: If you are updating a catalog using the PowerShell SDK directly, rather than Studio, you can specify a hypervisor template (VMTemplates), as an alternative to an image or a snapshot of an image.
Rollout strategy.
Updating the image on the next shutdown is provided when you are using the Citrix Connector for System Center Configuration Manager.
If you choose to update the image immediately, configure a distribution time and notifications.
Distribution time: You can choose to update all machines at the same time, or specify the total length of time it should take to begin updating all machines in the catalog. An internal algorithm determines when each machine is updated and restarted during that interval. Notification: In the left notification dropdown, choose whether to display a notification message on the machines before an update begins. By default, no message is displayed. If you choose to display a message 15 minutes before the update begins, you can choose (in the right dropdown) to repeat the message every five minutes after the initial message. By default, the message is not repeated. Unless you choose to update all machines at the same time, the notification message displays on each machine at the appropriate time before the update begins, calculated by an internal algorithm.
Roll back an update.
After you roll out an updated/new master image, you can roll it back. This might be necessary if issues occur with the newly-updated machines. When you roll back, machines in the catalog are rolled back to the last working image. Any new features that require the newer image will no longer be available. As with the rollout, rolling back a machine includes a restart.
Select Machine Catalogs in the Studio navigation pane. Select the catalog and then select Rollback machine update in the Actions pane. Specify when to apply the earlier master image to machines, as described above for the rollout operation.
The rollback is applied only to machines that need to be reverted. For machines that have not been updated with the new/updated master image (for example, machines with users who have not logged off), users do not receive notification messages and are not forced to log off.
Upgrade a Machine Catalog or revert an upgrade.
Upgrade the Machine Catalog after you upgrade the VDAs on the machines to a newer version. Citrix recommends upgrading all VDAs to the latest version to enable access to all the newest features.
Before upgrading a Machine Catalog:
If you’re using Provisioning Services, upgrade the VDA version in the Provisioning Services console. Start the upgraded machines so that they register with the Controller. This lets Studio determine that the machines in the Machine Catalog need upgrading.
To upgrade a Machine Catalog:
Select Machine Catalogs in the Studio navigation pane. Select the catalog. The Details tab in the lower pane displays version information. Select Upgrade Catalog . If Studio detects that the Machine Catalog needs upgrading, it displays a message. Siga as instruções. If one or more machines cannot be upgraded, a message explains why. Citrix recommends you resolve machine issues before upgrading the Machine Catalog to ensure that all machines function properly.
After the catalog upgrade completes, you can revert the machines to their previous VDA versions by selecting the catalog and then selecting Undo in the Actions pane.
Note: If you have Windows XP or Windows Vista machines, they must use an earlier VDA version, and will not be able to use the latest product features. If you cannot upgrade those machines to a currently supported Windows operating system, Citrix recommends you keep them in a separate catalog.

This article contains answers to the frequently asked questions about Personal vDisk.
Visão geral.
Q: What version of XenDesktop is Personal vDisk (PvD) available?
A : PvD is a feature available in all editions of XenDesktop 5.6 and 7.x.
Q: Is PvD compatible with XenApp?
A : It is only available for XenDesktop.
Q: Which hypervisors are supported?
A : PvD is supported on Citrix XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V, and VMWare ESX.
Q: What hypervisor storage is supported?
A : Any storage targets defined or supported on the hypervisor might be used to store the PvD. They might be the same as the Virtual Machine or different targets.
Q: How is the PvD affected when the base image is updated (such as service packs, applications, and hotfixes)?
A : Changes in PvD persist not just across restarts but also across base image changes.
Q: Is a PvD the same as a differential disk?
A : No, PvD operates at the object level (files, folders, and registry). This enables all the changes that have been captured to persist across a base image updates whereas a differential disk would become invalidated in the case of a base image update.
Q: Can a PvD work in a provisioned target device?
A : Yes, both Machine Creation Services (MCS) and Provisioning Server.
PvD can only be configured within a virtual target device. A physical target device is not support.
Q: Can multiple PvDs be associated to a device/user?
A : There can only be one PvD per Virtual Machine. The PvD is assigned to a Virtual Machine when building the catalog of desktops. The pool type for a PvD catalog is a pooled static, which the desktop is assigned to the user on first use.
Q: Is the PvD a 1-1 mapping per user?
A : Actually, it is a 1:1 mapping to a Virtual Machine in a catalog, which is then assigned to the user on first use. A PvD is attached to a Virtual Machine assigned to the user. The administrator can move a PvD to a new virtual machine in a recovery situation.
Q: If you create a catalog for pooled with PvD, it does not mean that the user is always required to be assigned to that Virtual Machine defeating one of the benefits of a pooled?
A : The base image is still shared and updated across the pool. However, once the user makes an initial connection to a Virtual Machine, the Virtual Machine is kept assigned to the user.
Note: You must connect early in the starting stage long before you know who the user is in order to maximize the application compatibility for services, devices etc.
Q: How does the pooled with personal vDisk catalog affect idle pool?
A : After the user connects, this user is kept assigned to the Virtual Machine.
You must connect early in the starting stage long before you know who the user is in order to maximize the application compatibility for services, devices etc. So for hypervisor resource management, instead of idle pool management, you would use power management to handle Virtual Machine idle workloads.
Q: What Operating Systems are supported for PvD?
A : Windows 7 x86, Windows 7 x64 and Windows 10.
Q: Is PvD only for Desktop Operating Systems or will it also work with Server Operating Systems?
A : It is only supported on Desktop Operating Systems.
Design and Deploy.
Q: What kinds of risks are there for BSODs with PvDs?
A : PvD is architected to be compatible with a wide range of Windows software, including software that loads the drivers. However, drivers that load in phase 0 or software that alters the networking stack of the machine (through the installation of additional miniports or intermediate or protocol drivers) might cause PvD to not operate as expected. You must install these types of software in the base Virtual Machine image.
Q: Can we have different versions of an application, for example - Office 2003 on the base image and Office 2007 on the PvD?
A : PvD does not provide application isolation. Some software might support this if they can coexist peacefully. Other software that does not support multiple versions concurrently must be uninstalled either from the base or PvD, or provided by an isolation technology like Citrix Application Streaming.
Q: Should the paging file be captured on the PvD?
A : No. If you try to configure it this way, then the PvD will ignore this and will use the base Virtual Machine image (or Diff disk).
Q: Is there a specific A/V configuration recommended with PvD?
A : A/V solutions that integrate with the hypervisor and scan outside the Virtual Machine tend to perform best.
Q: Do I still require Profile Management?
A : Personal vDisk does not roam. So if you have users that require profile roaming, you must use a roaming profile solution with PvD. It has been tested and supported with Citrix Profile Management.
Q: Does a PVD roam or is it assigned to single desktop?
A : A PvD is attached to a Virtual Machine or machine, which is then assigned to the user. The administrator might move a PvD to a new machine in recovery situations.
Q: May I use a separate user profile solution with PvD?
A : Yes. There is a registry setting that also tells PvD to not cache the profile (and thereby save PvD disk space). This is required when managing the profile with a separate technology such as Citrix Profile Management to prevent PvD from redirecting the profile onto the vDisk configure:
KEY : "HKLM\Software\Citrix\personal vDisk\Configuration" VALUE : "EnableUserProfileRedirection" 0: Profile is not directed to the PvD 1: Profile is redirected to the PvD.
Caution ! Refer to the Disclaimer at the end of this article before using Registry Editor.
Q : Has Citrix’s Profile Management integration with PvD been tested?
A : Yes. There is a registry setting that also tells PvD to not cache the profile (and thereby save PvD disk space).
Q: What is the minimum size for the Personal vDisk?
A : 3GB is the minimum size and will be split per the administrator-defined configuration for two areas:
Applications and machine settings.
Profile data (c:\users)
By default, this is 50/50 split. If less than 4 GB size is defined, an allocation of 2GB for applications and machine settings and 1GB for profile data is used.
Selection larger than 4 GB respects the 50/50 allocation split.
If the PvD is set to less than 3 GB (if it even is able to attach successfully), then when the user logs on to the pool environment for the first time, a warning message is displayed that PvD is not available.
Q: Is there a max size limitation for the Personal vDisk?
A : As large as your storage can handle.
Q: Does the user require administrator permissions in their PvD enabled Virtual Machine?
A : It is not required. This affects their ability to install application because PvD does not override any ACLs within the OS for the current user.
Q: What is the I/O impact of PvD desktops?
A : We have not published anything on this yet. While PvD has some additional IOPs, it is minimal. The impact of PvD desktops would be about the same as when using dedicated desktops.
Q : What are the guidelines handling IOPs across storage targets?
A : You might put the PvD on the same storage as base Virtual Machine or any other storage on that hypervisor. This would be general IOPS management or distribution and varies by the user.
Q: PvD must be on a file share or does it must to be connected to the storage on the host?
A : Only supported storage is through hypervisor storage targets.
Instalação.
Q : How do you configure Personal vDisk later if you choose not to enable it during the Virtual Desktop Agent (VDA) meta-installer?
A : Run the inventory updater in the base image through the start menu shortcut (or “Ctxpvd – s inventory”), which results in the service being started or inventory taken. At this point, the service is enabled and ready to run inventory and manage the PvDs.
Q: Does PvD install with the VDA or does it install in the controller too?
A : Only installs on the VDA or the Desktop. It installs both a windows service and kernel drivers.
Configuração.
Q: Can I change the PvD allocation split from the default split of 50/50?
A : Yes. You can configure the percent to be allocated for applications and machines settings by setting the registry value in the base image:
KEY : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Citrix\personal vDisk\Config VALUE : PercentOfPvDForApps By default, this value is set to 50 Changing this to 80 will result in the App install allocated space being allocated 80% of the PvD disk.
Q: Is the drive letter used by PvD able to be hidden?
A : Citrix personal vDisks have two parts which use different drive letters. The volume that stores user data (that is, C:\users) and personal vDisk log files. The drive letter for this part defaults to “P:” and it is Not hidden.
The other part comprises a Virtual Hard Disk file (a. vhd file). This contains all other items, for example applications installed in C:\Program Files. By default, this part is hidden from users; this drive is not displayed in Windows Explorer.
Q: Is the UserData. vhd file inside the P: drive mounted as v:?
A : The disk that is attached at the hypervisor (created by the MCS/PvS wizard) is mounted as P:. The P: drive is where the user profile is redirected and captured. Also located on that P: drive is a UserData. vhd that is mounted as v:. The V: drive is where all the non-profile data attempting to write to the base Virtual Machine is redirected and stored.
v: is visible from command prompt windows but not from Windows Explorer.
Q: What happens if either the v: or P: drive letter is in use?
A : Drive conflicts leads to failures. You must ensure the use of available drive letters.
Q: How do I change PvD to use different drive letters?
A : The P: drive might be changed in Desktop Studio when creating the catalog. This should only be changed before usage since changing afterwards might lead to various errors (same as changing the c: drive to another letter after installation).
Note : Drive conflicts leads to failures.
Q: What is captured on the v: drive and what is capture on the P: drive?
A : The P: drive is the vDisk that is attached to the hypervisor to the Virtual Machine. It contains the user’s profile is redirected (c:\users … ). It also contains the UserData. vhd file that is in turn mounted as the v: drive.
The v: drive is where the applications and machines state is captured.
When resetting the PvD, you are resetting the v: drive (which is really restoring the UserData. vhd file on the P: drive to its original empty or template state.
Q: Are you able to exclude changes made to certain folders?
A : PvD does not provide an option to do this natively, but this can be done through Active Directory Group Policy and use of locking down those folders using Windows ACLs.
Inventory or Catalog Creation.
Q: After the PvD drive containing the computed inventory is un - mounted, (automatically once the inventory updater is finished) where in the Virtual Machine is this template Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) stored?
A : The template vhd file is stored in the C:\ProgramData\Citrix\personal vDisk folder.
Q: What is the use of rules with PvD (defining what user and machine settings are actually managed and saved by the PvD)?
A : It is not recommend modifying those files. Rarely would these require modification except as directed for a support case being diagnosed. The rules files are there in plain text to allow visibility for supportability purposes. The rules mechanism is not meant as a general-use tool for administrators to modify. The rules govern population of the template VHD (which contains the inventory plus control hive) and how differences are calculated during image update.
Q: Are there guidelines on how administrators can customize rules files?
A : It is not recommend modifying those files. Rarely would these require modification except as directed for a support case being diagnosed.
Q: What is the inventory relationship between the copy in the PvD location and the one in the C:\CitrixPvD\Settings\Inventory folder?
A : The contents of \CitrixPvd\Settings\Inventory are coming from the base image, which are copied into the VHD when it is started for the first time.
Note : Remember to keep *both* inventories around since during image update, it is required to calculate the difference of what changed between base Virtual Machine version 1 to 2, then merge that into the user’s changes which is kept in the VHD.
Machine Creation Services and Provisioning Services Support.
Q: Can I use the PvD with MCS and Provisioning Services?
A : Yes, the wizards added in XenDesktop 5.6 and Provisioning Services 6.1 support both MCS and Provisioning Services created PvD catalogs.
Q: Is it correct that the Differential, Identity, and PvD disks link to a Virtual Machine?
A : Correct. PvD is assigned or attached to a Virtual Machine and then the user is assigned a Virtual Machine on first use (a pooled static catalog).
Q: Is base image management changed for MCS or Provisioning Services?
A : PvD does not change the core of the base image or snapshot processing of Provisioning Services or MCS. The only new step is running the inventory process for PvD in that base image as the last step before snapshotting it for use in a catalog.
Q: How does PvD work with Provisioning Services streamed images?
A : Only streamed to virtual is supported. Streamed to physical is not supported.
Q: Is the PvD always attached to the same MCS clone?
A : A PvD is attached to a Virtual Machine in a pooled static catalog that is then assigned to the user. The administrator might move a PvD to a new machine in recovery situations.
Q: How is Intellicache affected or used?
A : IntelliCache might still be applied to Pooled-Static Virtual Machines.
Note : Anything actually redirected to the PvD disk will not be cached.
Q: Can I place the PvD on a different storage target than the write cache?
A : Yes. The Provisioning Services Setup Wizard enumerates the storage locations defined by the XenDesktop host record as options for storing the PvD disk. The Provisioning Services write cache location depends upon the disk attached to the template Virtual Machine that might or might not be the same storage.
Gestão.
Q: Is there any way to reset the PvD outside of using Desktop Director?
A : From elevated command prompt:
C:\Program Files\citrix\personal vdisk\bin\ctxpvd – s reset.
You might also use WINRM to invoke PvD WMI reset operation. This is how desktop director performs reset.
Q: Is there any mechanism to control the size of the various log files or control when they get overwritten or when a new one is created?
A : There is not a means to modify the built in behavior for managing the log files. When the PvD service starts the existing log files, (PvDSvc. log. txt and PvDActivation. log. txt) are renamed to. BAK files if the size is more than 800 Kb. The max size of “IvmSupervisor. log” is fixed and the oldest log entry is overwritten with new entry when maximum size is reached. The maximum size of the IvmSupervisor. log file is 10 MB.
Q: Is there a way to increase the size of the PvD without losing the data already stored there?
A : Yes, you can accomplish this by accessing the hypervisor console and increasing the PvD disk that is attached to the Virtual Machine. Data is never affected when expanding the vDisk. You might also use a script to perform this. The scripts are located on the media/ISO at Support\Tools\Scripts (resize - personal-vdiskpool. ps1).
Q: Where do I increase the Personal vDisk size?
A : You have the following three methods to choose from:
Desktop Studio (for new catalogs)
Directly on the Hypervisor (for existing catalogs/PvDs)
The script is located on the media/ISO at Support\Tools\Scripts (resize-personal - vdiskpool. ps1).
Q: How do we do a "PvD restore" to a Virtual Machine?
A : PvD is a separate VHD attached to the Hypervisor level. Backup and restore is required to be on the hypervisor storage level. You cannot backup or restore at the OS level since the backup agent will NOT be able to tell what is in the PvD and what is in the base. This means during the restore it would then populate everything back on to the PvD since all writes are redirected to the PvD. You should backup the VHD from the hypervisor storage and restore the same way.
Then reattach to the Virtual Machine through the Hypervisor console.
Note : You can also do a factory reset through Desktop Director. This only affects the non-profile data (only resets the data outside of c:\users\).
Q: Does "Reset Personal vDisk" in Desktop Director only reset installed applications and not the user’s profile?
A : This only affects the non-profile data (only resets the data outside of c:\users\).
Q: How do you reassign a PvD when a Virtual Machine is restored?
A : You attach it through the hypervisor to a Virtual Machine and then PvD will handle it on start (treat it as an image update).
Note : If the computer name has changed, you might have application issues where the applications tracked the computer name.
Q: Does ProcMon show the catalog query activity as Registry activity?
Q: How can I protect the PvD from the users?
A : The purpose of the PvD is to provide the users their personal vDisk for saving all their changes. Only inherent ACLs protect the operating system. If the user has permissions to install or uninstall, then there is nothing to stop them beyond the operating system permissions.
Q: How do I collect PvD logs?
A : The following command will generate an archive named PVDLOGS. ZIP in the current working folder. If your user account does not have write access to the folder, it will be available in the %TEMP% folder.
C:\Program Files\Citrix\Personal vDisk\bin\ctxpvd - log.
A: No, As per the recommendations windows updates should be installed on Base Image, followed by inventory upgrade.
If the windows updates are directly installed on the Pvd, it'll cause a window update mismatch between the Pvd and the Base Image, resulting in Pvd Failure.
Base Image Management.
Q: Can you update the Pooled Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) image and keep the PvD?
A : This is exactly the purpose of the PvD. PvD persists the user's environment across both the restarts and image updates.
The Image update must be of the same 'lineage' of the original VM. In other words, it needs to be from the same VM base image. It could be a different snapshot. You cannot presently move PVDs between entirely different Windows installations (eg, entirely different base VMs - this is not what PVD is designed to do).
Q: During the image update or merge, does the base Virtual Machine always win out (if a user has installed a newer version of an application in their PvD will that executable be overwritten with older versions installed on the base Virtual Machine)?
A : It depends when the older versions was installed on the base Virtual Machine. If PvD detects that the same exact content is installed, then during the image update operation PvD saves space for that redundancy, and removes the PvD reference and use the one from the base image. The user-installed file is de - referenced on image update only if it is detected that the state of the corresponding file in the Base Virtual Machine is changed.
Q: What happens if you have a conflict, such as the same files with identical time stamps OR same files with different time stamp?
A : If PvD detects that the same exact content is installed, then during the image update operation PvD saves space for that redundancy, and removes the PvD reference and use the one from the base image.
Q: If there is a file version conflict with the user installed application, what is the user experience?
A : The default rules state that the base image copy always wins. So that version would start for the user.
Q: Can you commit PvD changes to the base image?
A : No, there is not a mechanism to do that. You can however make any changes to the base image to account for frequently installed applications. Then on subsequent starting of the applications, if the user also had the same application in their PvD, the PvD software will remove the user’s copy to save space.
Q: In Desktop Studio, how is the ‘Preparing’ state controlled after image update?
A : After the PvD lifecycle change has happened (the Start - BrokerCatalogPvdImagePrepare or Start-BrokerMachinePvdImagePrepare cmdlets have been called by Desktop Studio), then the broker will start up machines as required to cause the prepare to happen, but would not necessarily shut down running machines unless the roll-out strategy calls for it.
For example, if the roll-out strategy is to do it immediately, then Studio will ask the broker to shut down the machines immediately, after which the broker starts up again (because of their PvD lifecycle state) and do the prepare operation.
Note : The broker has different throttling rules for the prepare part of the PvD lifecycle, and there is a whole new throttling metadata item on the hypervisor connection to control this.
Q: Will manually running the inventory process change the base Virtual Machine to enable PvD such that on next shutdown the inventory reminder will trigger?
A : If the inventory is run manually on a base Virtual Machine that was originally configured with PvD disabled (as selected during the VDA installation), PvD will subsequently become enabled. This means you will receive inventory reminder on subsequent shutdowns after that.
Q: What is the end-user experience when they log into their Virtual Machine after base image has been updated?
A : The end user sees the new base Virtual Machine image content (whatever changed) plus their personalization content (PvD content).
Q: If a base image update has been rolled out and PvD has already been running against this new base image, can we rollback to a previous image version if the latest image is bad?
A : Yes. PvD would handle this as just another base image update.
Q: How are GPO Computer changes or updates captured with PvD?
A : Like all writes to the local drive, registry writes such as group policies are also captured in the PvD.
Application Compatibility.
Q: Are there any known problems with anti-virus software?
A : Citrix ensures that Anti-Virus is left on PvD since they are constantly updated and hence have tested all the major software.
Q: Does the user have to install applications?
A : Does not matter how they are installed. The applications might be installed by the user, the administrator or by ESD solutions like System Center Configuration Manager.
Q: What about applications that the user installs that integrate with core applications (such as Office or Internet Explorer plug-ins)?
A : These should work perfectly fine.
Run Time Behaviors.
Q: What gets captured on the PvD?
A : Everything that attempts to write to the base image will be redirected and captured in the PvD (except for a few items such as the paging file).
Q: Can an individual install software or are Active Directory (AD) access rights carried across to stop them?
A : Correct. PvD does not override OS ACLs or permissions. If the user does not have permissions to install, PvD does not change that.
Q: If for some reason the PvD service goes down or does not start on boot, will it result into a system crash or will the Virtual Machine remain usable?
A : The Virtual Machine will remain usable, although without the user’s personalization being available. In this scenario, the user will receive a warning message indicating the type of failure, and troubleshooting options (log collection, etc) to assist in diagnosing the problem.
Q: Is the page file captured on the PvD?
A : The PvD will ignore the pagefile as you do not want the PvD to capture the pagefile. It would remain on the diff disk. Certain files that do not require persistence (like paging files) are ignored by PvD and left to the diff disk.
It is not required to waste space on the PvD for this type of data.
Q: When using application virtualization technologies, are the streamed applications still running in isolation or sandboxes?
A : Yes, PvD does not affect isolation or interfere with it. If the application is configured to run in an isolated sandbox, PvD will not affect that.
Q: How does PvD handle applications running from Citrix Streaming or App-V?
A : PvD does not alter or affect any isolation of applications delivered using streaming technology. PvD is transparent to the application being installed or streamed. The applications will write to the PvD area in order to persist that data for the user.
Q: How much does PvD add to the Virtual Machine boot time?
A : During normal operations, boot time is only affected minimally (1-2 seconds). When performing maintenance or image updates, there will be some time costs. Inventory only occurs in base image preparation (not the user impact) and on first boot after an image update (reconcile between old base, new base and user's PvD). This can take 10-15 minutes or more depending on how much change occurred. The broker will have the Virtual Machine in a 'preparing' state during this time, meaning the user cannot log in yet. Once finished, it will be ready for user logon.
Q: What happens if the user installs or copies something that goes beyond the size of the disk?
A : It would be the same behavior as any situation where disk space runs out and the user will receive a Windows error upon the failure in writing to the disk. The user would also likely see a Windows error warning about low disk space.
Q: Can the PvD size be dynamically changed?
A : Not dynamically but on restart. You change the PvD size with a script. Then on next restart, that expansion will be applied.
Q: What happens if the PvD Service goes down?
A : It depends on which mode you are operating. In base Virtual Machine mode, it will be useless since the service creates the inventory. Basically, this part of base image preparation is not a user impact.
In pool Virtual Machine mode (when the user is actively using it) the machine PvD would still start but you lose some functionality like the work space reset feature.
Q: Can the PvD temporarily be set to read only?
Q: What is the difference between the v: drive and c: drive?
A : From the perspective of the operating system, they are identical. So from the operating system perspective, there is no way to tell what is in base or what is on PvD. So if you actually look at the v: drive, it will be exactly the same as c: drive.
Q: What happens when user "deletes" something from the base image?
A : PvD will track deletes.
Q: If the user installs an application when using Personal vDisk, is it just for that user?
A : Correct. It is captured on their PvD only.
